Zicam and Loss of Smell

from taking the over the counter homeopathic medicine
Zicam, it is wise to consult one of our product liability

Symptoms resulting from use of these Zicam products
include: anosmia (loss of the sense of smell) or ageusia
(loss of taste) and there may also be burning sensations
in the nasal cavities. The burning sensations were reported
to have occurred directly after taking the product.
Loss of the senses of taste and smell follow, and can
be either long-lasting, or possibly permanent. Some
major problems from losing these senses are endangering
to a person, including being able to not smell smoke,
spoiled food, or a gas leak. Loss of these senses may
also adversely affect the quality of a person's life,
as they would then be unable to enjoy the flavor and
pleasures of food and aromas.
The drug was created for and marketed as a relief from
the common cold. It allegedly reduced the length and
severity of illness when taken immediately. In fact,
a common cold will terminate itself within 7 to 14 days.
Zicam was advertised as a product that would reduce
both the severity and length of a cold.
Other oral Zicam products for combating colds are not
under recall. The Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size have
already been discontinued. Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
and Cold Remedy Gel Swabs are no longer being actively
sold.
Again, if you or any family member has taken these Zicam
products and later experienced loss of smell or taste,
