Law, Injuries, and the Florida International University Bridge Collapse
The collapse of the pedestrian bridge at Florida International University in Miami has been called a “colossal failure” caused by “complete incompetence” by family members in news reports. Its collapse, which killed six people and injured several more, also raises serious questions about how the bridge was constructed and being erected, issues Miami personal injury and construction accident attorneys already are examining.
Days before the collapse, an engineer working for FIGG Engineering-Bridge Group, the company that designed the bridge, left a voicemail for a Florida Department of Transportation employee noting that a crack had formed on the north end of the span.
"We've taken a look at it and ... obviously some repairs or whatever will have to be done,” the engineer said in the voicemail. "But from a safety perspective, we don't see that there's any issue there so we're not concerned about it from that perspective. Although obviously the cracking is not good and something's going to have to be, ya know, done to repair that."
This dismissal of the immediate threat is concerning to say the least. At this Miami / Fort Lauderdale law firm, all available reports on the accident are being reviewed by our attorneys, headed by a partner who also is a Florida licensed general contractor. With our experience in bridge construction, we have a unique insight into the design, development, and deployment of the FIU bridge.

As investigators and reporters are discovering, securing the span under the “accelerated bridge construction” process raises questions about how, whether, when, or if the span was being secured.
What Are The Legal Steps?
Personal injury attorneys throughout Florida also will be hiring expert witnesses in the field of building and bridge construction to give their opinions on any possible construction flaws. These experts are critical to helping determine what went wrong, especially for families who will be seeking damages as a result of the accident. Yet, almost all firms will be looking outside their ranks for those experts.
Having an attorney who also is a Florida licensed general contractor separates this law firm from the others. We will be following this case closely as news reports unfold.
