JUUL Lawsuit & Injury Compensation

Holding Vaping Companies Accountable for Deceiving Teens in South Florida

In recent years, e-cigarettes have surged in popularity and are impacting our country’s youth. Vaping companies, like JUUL, deceive smokers into believing that e-cigarettes are a safe alternative to quitting and they mislead nonsmokers, particularly teenagers, into believing that e-cigarettes aren’t harmful. All the while, they fail to warn consumers about the true dangers of nicotine addiction and related diseases. Our JUUL injury lawyers in Fort Lauderdale intend to hold these irresponsible companies accountable for the harm they’ve caused.

Take Legal Action Against Companies Targeting Your Teen

As one of Florida’s leaders in tobacco litigation, Schlesinger Law Offices, P.A. is uniquely experienced to help victims of vaping addiction/illness and concerned parents alike take legal action against e-cigarette manufacturers, like JUUL. These companies have taken a page from the Big Tobacco’s playbook and are deceptively advertising and marketing e-cigarettes to our youth. It is no coincidence that the largest tobacco company in the U.S. – Altria – recently purchased a 35% stake in JUUL, which makes it the most popular e-cig manufacturer in the country.

About Juul E-Cigs

Juul Labs creates and sells e-cigarettes, which are small electronic smoking devices that resemble USB thumb drives. E-cigs have been marketed as a favorable alternative to cigarette smoking, oftentimes leading consumers to believe that the use of e-cigarettes, or vaping, is healthier and less harmful than cigarette smoking. Unfortunately, the use of e-cigarettes is just as harmful, if not more so, than traditional cigarettes. There are several e-cigarette makers currently on the market, but Juul leads the pack by controlling nearly 70% of the market for vaping products.

The Dangers Associated with E-Cigarettes

Although vaping has been considered a safe alternative to traditional smoking, it is actually quite harmful. Despite the company’s defenses claiming that their products are made with minimal toxins and chemicals, Juul e-cigs do contain several dangerous components. Each Juul pod contains a high dose of nicotine, though they’re often masked by a selection of childish, sweet flavors. In fact, according to Juul Labs, one of their Juul pods contains roughly the same amount of nicotine as one entire pack of cigarettes.

In addition to the high nicotine content, Juul e-cigs also contain a host of dangerous chemicals. One ingredient commonly found in e-cigarettes, diacetyl, becomes extremely harmful when vaporized and has been known to cause bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare and deadly lung condition. This condition, also called “popcorn lung”, is extremely painful and can be fatal if untreated. Although diacetyl is not used in Juul products, Juul Labs packs a larger quantity of nicotine in their products to make up for the lack of this harmful chemical.

Nicotine use can be extremely harmful, especially in larger quantities. All e-cig users can suffer major side effects, but teens and young adults, Juul’s primary consumers, are especially at risk. Because teens and young adults are still experiencing the later stages of brain development, the use of excessive nicotine can have especially harmful effects.

Nicotine Use Can Result in the Following:

  • Increased risk of blood clots
  • Enlargement of the aorta
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Blood restriction to the brain
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased risk of stroke
  • Lung spasms
  • Increased risk of pneumonia
  • Muscular pain
  • Increased risk of diabetes

In addition to the above side effects, the use of nicotine can, and often does, result in nicotine addiction. When addicted to nicotine, a person’s behaviors change, and it can result in cognitive deficits, mood swings, cravings, anxiety, depression, and several other side effects. Withdrawal from nicotine can be uncomfortable and extremely difficult to overcome, which is one of the reasons e-cigarette use is such a problem for young, impressionable minds.

How Big of a Problem is Vaping Among Teens?

The problem of teen addiction to e-cigarettes is not an exaggeration. It is a real, pressing issue that may be more widespread than you realize. Teens are being targeted by vaping companies who use deceptive marketing and advertising to lure teens into using e-cigarettes.

Using Both NIDA and Truth Initiative Materials, We Get a Better Picture of the E-cig Problem Among Teens:

  • In 2017, nearly 12% of high schoolers and 3% of middle schoolers vaped, about a 500% increase since 2011. This number is expected to rise even further as data comes in for 2018.
  • In 2015, 65%
  • Teenage boys are twice as likely to use e-cigarettes as teenage girls, likely due to advertisements that often show how “cool” it is to vape.
  • 31% of teens that use an e-cig begin smoking regularly within the next six months.

To make matters worse, teens don’t know what they’re getting into. For example, 66% of vaping teens thought the vapor was only flavoring mixed with water. About 14% had no clue what was in an e-cig, and just 13% knew there was nicotine in all vaping devices. In short, most teens are being sold e-cigs without ever having the knowledge about what they are buying and what it can do to their long-term health.
